NATIONAL POST: AUGUST 27, 2008
Nuptials, anyone? As far as life’s greatest rites go, the wedding held last Sunday at the Toronto Lawn Tennis was one of those who’s-y who weddings. Art Eggleton, Toronto’s longest-serving mayor — who also minded the troops during his time as minister of defence in Jean Chrétien’s cabinet — was wed to his medical-care-dabbling, Guyana-born, fantastically-named significant other Camille Bacchus.

At “The Lawn,” as the Rosedale set-club is often referred to, “Camille is known for her formidable forehand sweep and is teaching Art how to improve his game” — that’s what one spy spills. “Like other couples,” I’m further told, “they play better when they compete against each other in doubles.”

As for Sunday’s very special match, the wedding drew a menagerie of political insiders and society stalwarts. Guests included Paul and Gina Godfrey, Dr. Carolyn Bennett and husband Peter O’Brian, Martha Hall Findlay, Ralph Lean, Peter Donolo and Bill Marshall. Think also: Senator David Smith, Walter Arbib and Surjit Babra, David Crombie and wife Shirley, George and Helen Vari, Ray Heard and Gillian Cosgrove, Ottawa Mayor Larry O’Brien, Mark Starowicz and Alan Tonks.

In his speech — and all the speeches were willfully brief — the groom said he would not, definitely not, be changing his name to Art Bacchus! The bride, by the way, wore a dress crafted in Paris.
